Product selection criteria

At the Village Tree we are committed to sourcing and selling high quality, mostly locally made products that create jobs, that do not harm the environment and provides a much needed income to vendors. We have a few basic rules we use to decide which vendors and products to allow on our site. To be sure that your products adhere to these rules and standards, we have summed them up for you.


Selection Criteria:

1. Only high quality and preferably locally (RSA) made products are accepted.

2. Products need to be well made with the well being of the planet, workers and buyers who will
spend time and money on the products at heart.

3. We do not accept cheap, low quality, mass produced factory products of any kind. (ie, “China
Mall” type products).

4. Your products may include anything from the following list (if you don’t see your product
category on the list, please contact us at and talk to us
about including your category).

  • Homeware
  • Kitchenware
  • Art (Mosaics, Photography, Paintings, Ceramics)
  • Handmade arts & crafts
  • Clothing
  • Shoes
  • Natural handmade cosmetics
  • Natural food supplements
  • Plants (Plants need to be legal, not require permits and sold and delivered within a radius of 50km)
  • Bags & Accessories
  • Jewelry
  • Outdoor items like braai, camping, sport and recreational accessories
  • Linen
  • Self published books/children’s books/nature books
  • Woodwork
  • Toys (handmade/educational)
  • Furniture (handmade/repurposed)
  • Vintage & collectable items
  • Recycled/upcycled products
  • Food (both fresh and preserved) You need to guarantee the freshness of any fresh produce.

5. Aesthetic packaging with limited or no use of single use plastics is encouraged.

6. Organic, recycled and eco-friendly products and art is encouraged, as well as products that have
created jobs through entrepreneurship programs or community projects.

7. We do not allow the sale of goods that have in any way contravened or broken any regulations
or laws in the Republic of South Africa.

8. We do not allow the sale of any live animals or pets on our site, neither do we allow any
advertising related to this.

9. Health products sold in your store on our website need to be legal in South Africa, safe and all
claims made regarding products need to be backed up by vendors.

10. Your products need to be of a practical, deliverable size and weight – if not, special shipping
arrangements need to be made with the customer.

11. No services shall be sold on the Village Tree. The site is only meant for physical goods.
